Synopsis

"On the way to the sea" is a poetic film that weaves together fictional elements, documentary fragments and visual abstraction, investigating the dreams, memories and sensory perceptions of two earthquake survivors. Lyrical and haunting, this film reflects on the fragile human condition in these times of increasingly frequent disaster.

Tao Gu

Tao Gu was born in Wenchuan, Si Chuan Province in China. Tao Gu initiated his artistic endeavors in 1998 as an experimental radio host in China, and soon after began exploring a variety of creative media. Tao was introduced to filmmaking through his work as a sound recordist on the documentary Green Jade Station (2002), which was presented at the Amsterdam International Film Festival in 2004, and later took a leading role in the fictional documentary reenactment Foggy Valley (2003), which received the Academic Prize by the Chinese Documentary Association in the same year. His directorial debut was the avant-garde stage drama “Evenfall YA LA SO”, presented to the public in Kun Ming, China in 2003, which received great critical acclaim. From 2004 to 2007, he studided in Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, Major in Film Production. Upon his arrival in Canada, his cinematic work shifted towards experimental filmmaking. His 2007 film Butterfly Dream has been selected by numerous international film festivals, including the 36th Festival du Nouveau Cinema, 10th Boston Underground Film Festival and the 26th Rendez-vous du Cinéma Québécois. In April, 2010, He has completed a poetic short film entitled On The Way to The Sea, with the support of The Canada Council for the Arts, Quebec Conseil des arts et des letters, NFB/FAP, and The Film Factory/Main Film.
